FARLEY ON FASHION
JB- Your outfits... I was going to say, 'Give me one word to describe those.' But who picks those, because they often seem to be a major talking point on the show. Who picks them? Do you pick them? Do you have a choice? How does that happen?
FF- I don't have a stylist on the show.
JB- you don't need one.
FF- I style myself based on who I am. I don't know if you saw the Canadian Press article, but I said specifically I work in the corporate sector of the entertainment industry as well as I work on the street with young artists et cetera et cetera. So it's a hybrid of those two realities, and my definition of corporate as a black Canadian man is that the suits that were designed for corporate people at that time, especially when that concept originated, certainly they weren't considering black men in the boardroom at the time. I have to look at that and say, 'Do those colours make any sense?' in my view. And if they don't, then they won't.
I like colours. My African heritage - via the Caribbean via Canada - shows me and tells me that vibrance is part of my heritage. I like vibrant colours. I like colours that look good on me and styles that are cut to suit my physique. So to have that autonomy is a wonderful thing, because I like clothes, I like looking good. I like trying new things, as long as they're reasonably compatible with my physique, my size and image and all that other stuff. So I have a lot of fun with that part of the show.
JB- So it was Greg Neufeld coming to you for tips on how to be perfect, wasn't it?
FF- (laughing) Good one.
JB- You have nothing to say to that one?
FF- I'm a really big fan of his. I think that guy rose to the occasion big time. I don't know what happened there, but he'll have a career.
JB- Where do you see him a year or two from now?
FF- He's got to make sure he has great songs on his record like any artist does, but the point is if he gets out to perform great songs, he's going to be hard to deny. He'll have a career in this country. He's charismatic. He's gracious. He's humble. Those are three of my favourite qualities in human beings, and I think once people get to know him in that intimate capacity - that bar that holds anywhere to 150 to 450 people - he'll be able to create a groundswell that will catapult him into some sort of medium-term career at least.
JB- Always good to get your thoughts on the show. Opinionated as always.
FF- I appreciate you still indulging. You take good care. All the best, my friend.
