JB- It's only been a matter of hours since you were voted off the show, but have you had the chance to think about what direction you want your music career to go?
DW- Yeah, I've always had a backup plan. I have for a while now. Every time you go into judgment nights it's a coin toss. When I was against Mookie (Morris) in the bottom two I thought, "This is it for me" at that point. Making the top 3 is great and yeah, I've had a lot of publicity and the next major step is to make a record that I'm proud of and just see what happens.
JB- Earlier this week we saw the hometown visits. Having so much support from your community is pretty amazing, isn't it?
DW- It's unbelievable. I can't really explain it. The fact that people are taking time to pick up the phone and vote numerous times - sometimes over a thousand times, some people - it gets you to think about the support of a community, and the surrounding communities in the area. It's just been unreal.
JB- Again, giving a behind-the-scenes look into the show, what sort of a bubble are you in when you're on the show? You're limited to the exposure you have to things, so did you know that you had that much support from home?
DW- I was hearing through the grapevine a lot of what was going on, but not a lot, and not really comprehending it as well as I could have, I suppose. When we went home to film the shoot for the top 10 that's when it really started to sink in. And then going home again for the top 3 show that was just unbelievable.
JB- Looking ahead five years, where do you see things going? What is the big plan? If you could snap your fingers and something happens, what would it be?
DW- I just want to have probably two or three records under my belt at that time that I'm happy with and proud of and that represent me. Hopefully build more of a fan base as time goes on and hopefully make a career out of it, that's the main goal.
JB- You do get to experience your fan base again coming next week at the finale.
DW- Yeah, exactly. It's going to be nice to see people coming out to support that again, and it's good to get back together with the top 10 again and I'm looking forward to that.
JB- Well, I will see you in Toronto next week and I want you to make me a promise.
DW- Certainly.
JB- I want you to jump on the Earl train with me.
DW- (laughing) Absolutely! (laughing continues) The unfortunate part of that was he went to the wrong side of the audience. Had he gone to the other side it wouldn't have been a problem. We weren't sure what he was doing. Had he told us onstage we would have done it with him and could've got something happening.
JB- I have to admit, it was one of the most uncomfortable or awkward moments… for him, anyway.
DW- (laughing) Yeah, certainly! It was uncomfortable for us. We didn't know what he was doing at first and then he was just gone in a flash and we're like "what's going on here?" It took a second to kind of sink in. Yeah, it was pretty awkward! (laughing)
JB- So it's going to go Earl, JB, Drew and then we'll just get a whole line going through the theatre. Sound good?
DW- Oh yeah, sounds great.
JB- OK, Drew Wright, thanks so much for joining us today.
DW- Great, Jeremy. Thanks a lot.
